80 million people in the U.S. live with noticeably thinning hair

Interestingly, every human being, male or female, loses about 50-100 strands of hair every day, and this is considered normal. In the 2015 hair restoration practice census, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) survey found that Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) were the leading hair restoration procedures globally. In 2014, FUT accounted for over 50% of all procedures, while FUE accounted for over 45% (Source).

The leading body part, for both men and women, where the hair restoration procedure was done is the scalp. It accounted for almost 90% of all procedures. Eyebrows came in second among women. Moustache and beard were second among men (Source).

The same census, which focused on 274 ISHRS’ practicing hair restoration members, reported that there was a 76% increase on hair restoration procedures (both surgical and nonsurgical) between 2006 and 2014. Men accounted for 85% of the patients share while women took up 15%.

Newsweek.com reports that a recent study by the Northwestern University revealed that besides the desire for enhanced physical appearance, people who take the Botox injection do it as a result of emotional, psychological, and practical motivations.

How much does Botox cost?

Botox procedures’ costs vary from clinic to clinic. However, Groupon.com, the NASDAQ listed marketplace, estimates an average cost of US$20 per unit.  One single treatment of 20 units would cover one area of the face at a cost about US$400 (Source).

  • Forehead: This involves an injection on the forehead to get rid of lines that occur as a result of frowning, raising the eyebrows or squinting.

Botox uptake is (still) on the rise

According to the annual report on plastic surgery trends published by the ASPS, Botox injections uptake rose by 2% from the previous year, 2016. The report, which was published in 2017, ranked Botox as the most popular procedure in 2016 with a record of 7.23 million people undergoing the procedure (Source).

Laser treatment reduces scars by 50 to 80 percent

More often than not, a healing wound leaves behind an ugly scar that can make you uncomfortable about your looks. However, the Jefferson University Hospitals reports that laser treatment can reduce “the appearance of scars by 50 to 80 percent and help prevent a recurrence.”

According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), dermatologic surgery (concerned with the health of the skin) is on the rise. The ASDS reported that 12 million dermatologic procedures were performed in 2017. This number was twice the number of procedures performed in 2012 and 10% more than in 2016 (Source).

Laser treatment topped the list of Dermatologic with 3.2 million procedures. Other top procedures done in 2017 included: (Source).

  • Neuromodulators: Injects relaxers to get rid of facial wrinkles; it accounted for 2.1 million procedures
  • Soft-tissue fillers: Around 1.6 million procedures were done
  • Chemical peels: Had nearly 485,000 procedures done
  • Body sculpturing treatments accounted for 434,000 procedures

How Much Does Laser Treatment Cost?

The cost of laser treatment largely depends on the area being treated and the number of sessions you’d need to achieve your desired results (Source). However, the ASPS estimates the cost of laser treatment to between $1,000, and $2,300 per session (Source).

A Lip Enhancement Every 19 Minutes in the U.S.

The ASPS indicates that lip enhancement uptake has increased since 2000 to the extent that someone gets their lips enhanced every 19 minutes in the U.S. (Source).  According to a survey conducted by ASPS, most of the 1000 respondents named Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlet Johnson, and Jennifer Garner when asked which celebrity lips they aspired to have. Other popular names included Angelina Jolie, Lisa Rinna, Beyoncé, and Kylie Jenner (Source).

  • Dermal Filler Injections: The use of Hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvéderm & Restylane) to achieve smooth lip lines, increase lip volume, and boost lip shape.
  • Fat injections, also known as fat grafting, involves extracting fat from another area of your body to use as a lip filler.
  • Lip Implants: The use of soft, pliable silicon rubber to increase lip volume.

Lip enhancement can cost anywhere between $300 and $1700, depending on where you live (Source).

Total World Plastic Surgery Market

A new report released by the Market Research Future (MRFR) indicates that the cosmetic surgery market will be valued at $ 21.97 billion by the end of 2023. The same report indicates that the market will achieve an annual growth rate of 7.8% between 2017 and 2018. This growth links to social and cultural factors such as the media, the fashion industry, and the influence of the film industry (Source).
