We’ve analysed Instagram hashtags* to find out which styles we’re loving, along with the celebrities who are influencing our looks the most.

The Most Shared Hairstyles on Instagram

With a staggering 17.8 million Instagram posts, braids top our list of the world’s most popular hairstyles. Although a tricky style to master, braids offer huge potential if you want a style that you can really make your own.

Taking second place is the undercut, which has been snapped and shared almost 2.7 million times! This 2-in-1 hairstyle is perfect for those who want the best of both worlds; long hair with an edgy, short section underneath.

Following closely behind the undercut is the mohawk with 2.2 million posts. This striking style appeals to both men and women who want to stand out from the crowd.

Elsewhere in our list is the mullet, taking 10th position. Commonly associated with the 1980s, this retro style was rebooted recently by Miley Cyrus, who debuted a platinum blonde modern mullet in late 2020.

The graduated bob once made popular by Victoria Beckham comes in at 17th (91.8k posts), and the high ponytail we now associate with pop sensation Ariana Grande takes 15th place (219.5k posts).

Other trending hairstyles are also found in the top 25 include space buns (410,000) and bubble ponytails (25.5k).

Selena Gomez takes second place, with searches for her hairstyles totalling 175,200, while Ariana Grande follows closely behind in third place with 170,400 yearly searches.

Of the 26 celebrities in the table, more than half of the most popular hairstyle searches were for short hair, suggesting many of us are keen to sport a choppier style.

Interestingly, it’s the opposite story for some of the men who feature in our table. All of the long hair searches that feature in the table relate to men; Justin Bieber, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

In addition, the results suggest we’re more influenced by hairstyle rather than hair colour. Just five of the most popular celebrity styles specify a hair colour in the search terms.

There you have it; if you’re considering a new look, perhaps you’ll take some inspiration from Instagram or the A-list like so many of us around the world do.

*We analysed the number of times each hairstyle hashtag was used on Instagram and ranked the findings from high to low to reveal the most popular.
