Liposuction, lipoplasty or simply lipo is a surgical procedure that involves removing fat from specific parts of the body (usually on the abdomen, buttocks and extremities) by using a cannula which is a thin tube connected to a vacuum that suctions fat.

Dr Giorgio Fischer, a gynaecologist born in Rome, Italy is accredited with the invention of liposuction in 1974. Two French doctors, Dr Yves-Gerard Illouz and Dr Patrick Treacy developed the technique and were the first to use the procedure for cosmetic purposes. By the 1980s the surgery had become incredibly popular and was one of the most requested surgical cosmetic procedures in the world. However, the procedure required refining as there was much apprehension around liposuction techniques and a great need for higher levels of patient safety.

According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery , a liposuction procedure is best for resolving isolated fatty areas. The procedure takes approximately a couple of hours with usually only one treatment needed. The average recovery time is generally one to two weeks.

GLOBAL POPULARITY:

A.) Liposuction was the second favorite cosmetic surgical procedure in the world in 2020 and was performed 1,525,197 times across the globe in 2020. This number is 10.5% less than the number of procedures performed in 2019 (1,704,786 liposuction procedures).

B.) The number of liposuction procedures performed globally (1,525,197) accounted for 15.1% of the total cosmetic surgical procedures completed worldwide.

C.) 88.3% of plastic surgeons worldwide performed liposuction procedures in 2020.

D.) Statista records that there were more than 1.7 million liposuction procedures performed around the world in 2019.

E.) Statista also says that liposuction was ranked as the second favorite cosmetic procedure (comprising both surgical and minimally invasive procedures) when looking at how many Google searches there were for the procedure in 2021. There were 157,000 searches globally for liposuction by monthly search volume, whereas Botox (the most searched for cosmetic procedure online globally) recorded 381,000 monthly searches.

F.) There were 1,525,197 liposuction procedures performed across the globe in 2020 while the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure, breast augmentation, recorded 1,624,281 procedures worldwide in 2020.

GLOBAL POPULARITY - GENDER DISTRIBUTION

A.) 1,300,020 liposuction procedures were performed on women globally in 2020. It was ranked as the second most popular surgical cosmetic procedure for women in that year and accounted for 85.2% of the total liposuction procedures performed worldwide. The cosmetic surgical procedure that was most requested by women across the globe in 2020 was breast augmentation at 1,601,713 procedures.

B.) Liposuction was also ranked as the second most popular surgical cosmetic procedure for men globally in 2020. 225,177 procedures were performed on men and this figure accounted for 14.8% of the total liposuction procedures performed worldwide. The surgical procedure most done by men across the globe in 2020 was eyelid surgery at 257,159 procedures.

GLOBAL POPULARITY - AGE DISTRIBUTION

A.) 26,233 of the total liposuction surgeries done globally were performed on people aged 18 years or younger. This figure represents 1.7% of the total liposuction procedures recorded worldwide.

B.) 734,840 of the total liposuction surgeries done globally were performed on people in the 19-34-year-old category . This figure represents 48.2% of the total liposuction procedures recorded worldwide.

C.) 40.8% of the total liposuction surgeries recorded globally were performed on people aged 35-50 years . This means 621,823 liposuction surgeries were performed on people in this age group worldwide.

D.) 8.7% of the total liposuction surgeries recorded globally were performed on people aged 51-64 years . This means 132,082 liposuction surgeries were performed on people in this age group worldwide.

E.) 0.7% of the total liposuction surgeries recorded globally were performed on people 65 years or older . This means 10,219 liposuction surgeries were performed on people in this age group worldwide.

F.) Liposuction procedures are thus most popular within the 19-34 year age group and comprise nearly half of all liposuction surgeries done globally.

G.) Liposuction is least popular among older age groups, with people 51 and older making up less than 10% of the total liposuction surgeries performed globally.

Below are statistics for the top fourteen countries in terms of the number of liposuction surgeries performed in 2020.

1.) THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A.) There were a total of 1,485,116 surgical cosmetic procedures performed in the US in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 296,601 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was also the second most common surgical cosmetic procedure in the US and made up 20% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in 2020.

C.) The United States is the country where the most liposuction procedures were performed in 2020. At 296,601 procedures, it makes up 19.6% of the total liposuction procedures performed worldwide in 2020.

D.) 88.2% of plastic surgeons in the USA performed liposuction procedures in 2020.

2.) BRAZIL

A.) 1,306,962 surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in Brazil in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 173,420 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was also the most common surgical cosmetic procedure performed in Brazil and made up 13.3% of the total cosmetic surgical procedures.

C.) At 173,420 procedures, Brazil ranks second with the number of liposuction procedures performed in 2020, making up 11.4% of the total liposuction procedures worldwide.

D.) 96% of plastic surgeons in Brazil performed liposuction procedures in 2020.

3.) GERMANY

A.) There were a total of 425,855 surgical cosmetic procedures performed in Germany in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 77,682 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was also the most common procedure in Germany and made up 18.2% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in 2020.

C.) At 77,682 procedures, Germany ranks third with the number of liposuction procedures performed in 2020, making up 5.1% of the total liposuction procedures globally.

4.) MEXICO

A.) Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* comprised 16.2% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in Mexico. This means 74,105 of the total 456,489 surgical cosmetic procedures performed in Mexico in 2020 were liposuction surgeries.

B.) Liposuction was also the most common surgical cosmetic procedure in Mexico in 2020.

C.) Mexico ranks fourth with the number of liposuction procedures performed in 2020, at 74,105 procedures it makes up 4.9% of the total global liposuction procedures.

D.) 94.6% of plastic surgeons in Mexico performed liposuction procedures in 2020.

5.) INDIA

A.) There were a total of 255,528 surgical cosmetic procedures performed in India in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 60,120 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was the most common procedure in India and made up 23,5% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in 2020.

C.) India ranks fifth in global rankings for liposuction surgeries. The number of liposuction procedures performed in India in 2020 was 60,120, which makes up 3.9% of the total liposuction procedures performed globally.

6.) TURKEY

A.) 360,542 surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in Turkey in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 57,551 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was the second most common procedure in Turkey and made up 16% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in 2020.

C.) At 57,551 procedures, Turkey ranks sixth globally with the number of liposuction procedures performed in 2020, making up 3.8% of the total liposuction procedures.

7.) RUSSIA

A.) There were a total of 478,200 surgical cosmetic procedures performed in Russia in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 48,000 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was also the third most common procedure in Russia and made up 10% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in 2020.

C.) Russia ranks seventh in the world for the number of liposuction surgeries performed, making up 3.1% of the total liposuction procedures completed across the globe with 48,000 liposuction surgeries performed.

8.) COLOMBIA

A.) 208,416 surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in Colombia in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 34,656 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was the most common procedure in Greece and made up 16.6% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in Colombia in 2020.

C.) At 34,656 liposuction procedures performed in Columbia, it makes up 2.3% of the total number of procedures performed globally. Colombia ranks eighth for the total number of liposuction procedures performed in 2020.

9.) ARGENTINA

A.) 284,320 surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in Argentina in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 27,520 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was the fourth most common procedure in Argentina and made up 9.7% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in Argentina in 2020.

C.) Argentina ranks ninth globally with a total of 27,520 procedures performed in 2020. This figure makes up 1.8% of the total number of procedures performed.

D.) 89.5% of plastic surgeons in Argentina performed liposuction procedures in 2020.

10.) ITALY

A.) 245,400 surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in Italy in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 24,672 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was the third most common procedure in Italy and made up 10.1% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in Italy in 2020.

C.) Italy ranks tenth globally with a total of 24,672 procedures performed in 2020. This figure makes up 1.6% of the total number of procedures performed.

D.) 95.1% of plastic surgeons in Italy performed liposuction procedures in 2020.

11.) SPAIN

A.) 165,906 surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in Spain in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 18,900 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was the third most common procedure in Spain and made up 11.4% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in Spain in 2020.

13.) THAILAND

A.) There were a total of 102,407 surgical cosmetic procedures performed in Thailand in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 9,142 of those procedures.

B.) Liposuction was the fourth most common procedure in Thailand and made up 8.9% of the total aesthetic surgical procedures in 2020.

C.) 68.6% of plastic surgeons in Thailand performed liposuction procedures in 2020.

14.) JAPAN

A.) 222,642 surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in Japan in 2020. Liposuction performed on the body and extremities* made up 8,467 of those procedures.

B.) Unlike most other countries, where liposuction was in the top two of the most performed surgical cosmetic procedures performed, liposuction was only the fifth most common and made up 3.8% of aesthetic surgical procedures in Japan.

COSTA RICA

- The average cost for a liposuction surgery was 2,800 US dollars in 2019.

MEXICO

- In 2019 the average cost of a liposuction procedure in Mexico was 3,000 US dollars.

THE UNITED STATES

- The average fee for liposuction procedures for 2020 was $3,637.

2020 VERSUS 2019 VERSUS 2000 -

STATISTICS ON LIPOSUCTION IN THE UNITED STATES THE LAST 20 YEARS

A.) Liposuction was one of the top five cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States in 2020 and ranked fourth overall for the most requested cosmetic surgical procedure of that year.

B.) 211,067 liposuction procedures were performed in the United States in 2020. This number is 20% less than the previous year (2019) during which 265,209 liposuction procedures were performed.

This trend in the decrease of the number of procedures performed is not exclusive to liposuction however and reflects the overall decline in the number of plastic surgery procedures that took place in the United States in 2020 versus in 2019. The main reason for the decline in the Number of plastic surgeries is most likely due to the COVID19 pandemic that hit the globe in March 2020.

C.) The total number of cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2020 was 2,314,720, whereas that figure stood at 2,678,302 in 2019. This represents a 14% decline in the total number of plastic surgeries performed in the United States in 2020 versus in 2019.

However, when comparing the total number of cosmetic surgical procedures that were performed in the United States in 2000 versus in 2020 one will see that over the last twenty years there has been an increase in requests for plastic surgeries overall.

D.) In 2000 1,901,049 plastic surgeries were performed in the United States, which is 22% less than the total number of plastic surgeries performed in the United States in 2020 (2,314,720).

A.) In 2020 there were 2,346 people between the ages of 13 and 19 that had liposuction done in the United States. This comprised 1% of the total liposuction procedures performed in the United States in 2020. This figure is also 22% lower than the number of liposuction procedures completed for this age group in 2019.

B.) There were 21,349 liposuction procedures performed on people between the ages of 20 and 29 in the United States in 2020. This comprised 10% of the total liposuction procedures completed in 2020.
